Corey got slammed by this bass, using a steel shad, catching him off guard as it hit just feet from the boat. Lake Toho Largemouth bass have been feeding good for us. 

Lake Toho is always some fun bass fishing. One thing we try to follow is depending on the type of lure you are using, always try to keep an eye on things, working it all the way back to the boat. Corey was working the Steelshad on Lake Toho when he got caught off guard, his bass smacked the lure just a matter of feet from the boat. Close enough to the point he really didn’t even have a chance to set the hook on her, as she hit and tried to turn, setting the hook on herself.

This is something that actually happens quiet a lot in bass fishing, I personally have worked a lure, a senko type bait all the way back to the boat, and as I was lifting it out of the water, BAM a bass blows out of the water after it, just missing it.

Typically on Lake Toho there are always a few lures that always seem to catch bass, such as SteelShad, Red eye shads, senko type baits and flukes just to name a few. The one bait that always seems to produce, even in the toughest of conditions is the wild shiner. These baits will run anywhere from 3 inches to what seems like 2 pounds in size and have been awesome when targeting some of those trophy bass that everyone knows Lake Toho has.

When you fish the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, try not to limit yourself to just Lake Toho, there are several lakes on the chain and believe me they all will hold some seriously big bass. That is the reason Florida is called The Bass Fishing Capital of the world!

shallow crankbaitJune is the start of our heat, and most people think the bass fishing season is over. This is far from the truth. Early morning action is still very good. Live wild shiners will still get good numbers of bass and some scattered size to five pounds. As the temperatures warm up during the day, the bite will get more scattered, but with targeted casting you can still catch largemouth bass during the heat of the day.

tube baitLake Toho bass fishing is world famous for catching trophy bass, even during the summer months. This is where flipping and pitching will come in handy. Your focus in the heat of the day will turn to focusing on grass beds and floating mats, either punching thru or pitching your baits into “potholes” to target trophy bass. Idea baits are creature baits and tube baits.

Open water areas, with deeper waters holding submerged hydrilla will also be good areas to produce bass. These areas you can slow roll spinner baits, use shallow running crank baits and work ten inch worms to keep the action steady.

Arizona angler scoffs at winter storm, lands record striped bass

PHOENIX – While most people were huddled indoors out of the torrential rain on Dec. 7 while a major winter storm pummeled the state, John Davis was enjoying a fishing bonanza at Lake Pleasant, including landing a new inland state record striped bass.

2005229“I’ve never experienced anything quite like it, they were hitting topwater all day long in the rain. It was really something,” Davis said.

Arizona Game and Fish Department officials say John’s monster striper weighed in at 28.58 pounds and measured 45.7 inches long. He caught the behemoth on a Zara Super Spook, which is a topwater lure.

What’s more, he was the only angler out there braving the storm, and reaping the benefits.

John said the behemoth striper actually hit the lure twice without being hooked, but came back a third time. John was amazed he could even land the fish – it ran like a runaway freight train, tearing off line and it took him some time to subdue the giant.

Davis would like to have the striper mounted, or at least have a replica of it created.

Davis, a Phoenix resident, routinely fishes Lake Pleasant, but said he has never seen such phenomenal topwater action before. “The stripers were in a feeding frenzy in Humbug Cove. I was getting multiple hits on my topwater lures, all day long. It was amazing.”

John said the sometimes it rained very hard, but the wind didn’t blow, so it wasn’t too bad out there. “Actually, it was kind of nice.”

It’s always nice when you hit the jackpot. John caught and mostly released around 50 stripers during his rain-soaked, day-long fishing bonanza.

Game and Fish biologists said research studies at Lake Pleasant have shown that the majority of striped bass congregate in the northern coves during winter, especially over submerged creek and river channels.

“The striper fishing at Lake Pleasant has really taken off the past several years. In fact, the striper bite last winter was pretty remarkable – anglers were routinely catching dozens of fish. It looks like we are off to a good start again this winter,” said Fisheries Chief Kirk Young.

Lake Pleasant has not always had stripers, but it is the only lake in the state with white bass. However, when the Waddell Dam was raised in the early nineties, Central Arizona Project water from the Colorado River began being pumped into this popular desert reservoir on the Agua Fria River. Eventually, striped bass from the Colorado River got into the lake.

Capt. Jose Wejebe to begin 15th season on ESPN2

 
Spanish Fly with Capt Jose WejebeATLANTA (Dec. 8, 2009) – On Sunday, Dec. 27, Captain Jose Wejebe will depart on one of the greatest adventures he has taken his audience on, the launch of season 15 of Spanish Fly, currently the longest running outdoors program on ESPN2. This longevity will put Spanish Fly on par with beloved television programs like ER and Howdy Doody, each of which aired for 15 seasons.

Every week Spanish Fly host Jose Wejebe brings viewers on some of the greatest adventures in sportfishing, bringing new approaches to the technique, skill and craft of fishing. There they will not only learn new approaches to fishing but also the ancient Japanese art form of fish printing known as “gyotaku.” Later in the season, Wejebe and team revisit the USS Vandenberg. Last season viewers were brought behind the scenes as this vessel was intentionally sunk off Key West. This season the show will return to see how it has quickly become one of the best artificial reef dive sites for recreational divers worldwide as well a desirable destination.
