Lake Toho Bass Fishing Report

Lake Toho Bass fishing has been doing very good thru the middle of the month of December.

Several trips out on Lake Toho have produced some good numbers, and some quality bass. We did a little live bait fishing, bass responded well to this, but the main action was with the artificial baits. Steel Shad and spinner baits worked well on schooling bass. Schooling bass size was ok, the real catch came with rigging up a fluke with a half ounce weight, tossing it past the schooling bass and very slowly crawling it below the school to catch the quality bass.

Scattered hydrilla beds in mid lake have still been producing good numbers. Key has been to find the small isolated patches. These patches have been holding bass as of late for us. Friars cove has also been holding some quality bass. Gitem Shads, 10 inch worms and wacky rigged Gitem K.Os have been the main baits used to target these bass.

We also had the great pleasure of filming a bass fishing show with Bob Redfern’s Outdoor Magazine Television Series out on Lake Toho this month. We had a great time and got some good footage. All bass caught for the show were caught on Steel Shad and some on live bait. Show should be airing but the end of January 2010.

This day we used some live bait and caught a few good Largemouth bass before switching to artificial baits.

Central Florida Bass Fishing will cover many lakes. From Butler Chain of Lakes to Conway Chain, on over to Lake Toho. All of these lakes are within 20 minutes of all three major theme parks. Butler Chain is the closest lake to Disney World and can offer some very good bass fishing. Live wild shiners are typically one of the best baits of choice out here, or on any lake in Central Florida for catching those trophy largemouth bass. I get many clients that come down on that Disney vacation and they also love to bass fish, and this chain of lakes has everything they could ever want in Central Florida Bass Fishing.

This particular video was done on world famous Lake Toho. Lake Toho as everyone knows is probably the best place for bass fishing when it comes to catching the trophy bass in central Florida. Mix in Lake Cypress, Lake Kissimmee, Lake Rosalie, and lake Hatchineha and you have what is probably the best bass fishing in the world hands down.

Kissimmee Chain of lakes is well known to many as a place that will produce some serious trophy bass year round using the wild shiners, but it will also produce them using artificial baits as well. Some of the best baits out here are the zoom horny toad, the senko’s and prop baits. With the vast amount of vegetation out here, the areas of catching bass are unlimited and the techniques you can use are endless out here. Hydrilla is one of the key areas of many anglers focus, as the bass will relate to this cover, and when they do, one of the best options is flipping a meaty Gene Larew craw. Lake Toho bass fishing and wild shiners, what can we say. One sure fire way to make sure you catch some good numbers of bass is to use wild shiners. We tend to hook them with a circle hook, and usually start out by setting them about 2 foot below a float. Some may say 2 foot is not very deep, but when you are fishing a lot of water that is less than 6 to 8 feet deep, two foot is usually a pretty good starting point, especially when you are slow trolling them just above the hydrilla.

Easy way to help locate the bass quicker and to see which way they want to take your bait, is to also toss out a wild shiner on a freeline, this will allow the shiner to move around more freely in the water column, and sometime this is the best way to catch the largemouth bass.

Here is Florida, we fish the bass spawn, and a lot of the time, one of the best ways to catching those trophy bass is to cast a wild shiner past a bass bed, and then slowly reel it so it sits right over the top of the bass. This has triggered some very aggressive strikes and resulted in some very solid bass being caught. Just remember to be gentle handling the spawning bass, take a picture and release her back in the same area.

Float fishing can be a lot of fun, especially for those who very rarely bass fish, as when the bass go on the feed, you can watch your shiner jump out of the water as the bass are chasing it, this can be some really exciting action and definitely something that will spark a young kids interest into the world of bass fishing.

Orlando Bass Fishing Report

This past week on Butler Chain had its ups and downs. Monday and Tuesday saw some good top water action on Lake Butler. During the early morning we saw a good amount of schooling action. Tuesday turned out to be the best day with bass being caught on High Roller ChugRollers in Fire Tiger. Big bass for the day came in at a solid 3.8 pounds, and just slammed the ChugRoller.

Wednesday I had the great pleasure of having Kathy Barker from ProBass Networks out on Butler Chain. Kathy surprised me thou, when we met at McDonalds she had Skip Collins from High Roller Lures there with her. What I thought was going to be a great top water action day on Butler, was anything but that.

The bass did not want to play fairly, as we did see some schooling action going on, but they avoided any and all top water lures thrown at them, Skip did manage 2 bass on his secret lure, while Kathy caught two more bass, with her landing the big bass for the day and the bragging rights. Only 5 bass made it to the boat, as the blue bird skies seemed to have just shut down the artificial bite.

Thursday I had the McClain duo, husband and wife out on Butler. We started out with Margarita working live bait, and Carl with top water baits. There was very limited schooling action once again, but Carl was very determined to nail a nice bass on top water. He started out with an Original High Roller, but then switched to a ChugRoller. A very solid bass, in the 4 pound class came up to slam the bait. Carl said he felt her hit the lure so he set the hook, but she was gone. That, unfortunately was the end of the top water action for the day. Margarita continued to work the live bait, missing her first bass as it chased the shiner to the surface. She got too excited and the hook up was missed. After a few coaching words, Margarita didn’t miss another bass. We actually had to keep an eye on her, as she never said a word, we only knew she had one on when we heard the drag. Her big fish of the day came in at 5.1 pounds.

Mean while Carl was tossing around a Gitem Shad in watermelon red, with a small screw-in bullet weight. Flipping to grass bed edges, Carl managed some good quality bass, with his big bass of the day coming in at 5.2 pounds on the digital scale. These 2 had a great time on the water catching as Carl said “some good quality bass.”

Saturday we ended the week with my son wanting to head out to Butler and do some relaxing fishing using live bait. We hit Lake Butler and right off the bat he had the first bass of the day in less than 5 minutes of us being on the water. We pretty much just slowed trolled the live shiners around the grass beds with deeper water drop offs close by. My son landing 5 good solid bass caught within 2 ½ hours on live bait. A quick switch to a Fat A and he missed what looked to be close to a 4 pounder right by the boat. When he decided he was more than happy with his catch for the day, we headed back in.

The month of April has seen some great bass fishing action, as well as some tough action as the cold front came thru. This front grabbed a hold of us for a good two days, and after some very good bass fishing action, it really put a clamp on the action. Bass were still caught, but we did have to work harder for our catch. We had a few days of combo trips, working live and artificial baits, for the most part, the artificial baits we used were Gitem Warlocks and 7 inch ribbon tail worms, both worked with a 1/16th ounce bullet weight in and around grass beds.

Tom and Robert had a day of high winds which limited us to certain areas on the lake, the bite was very scattered and very light, as the bass would just pick up the baits and swim some with it, heart breaking moment came with Tom getting a light tick and the bass swimming under the boat, only to turn and come back out and jump right next to the boat, this beauty was an easy 7 pounder, as she spit the worm and swam away.

Doug and Todd had two days with us on Johns Lake, the first day was once again very light hits on the baits, with winds still up and weather very cool to start the day, bass were scattered as we hit several areas to get our catch. Day two we had much better action with calmer winds and warmer weather. Big bass for them coming in at 5.13 pounds.
Brian and John had some good action as well on live baits, bass were schooling some in the cut but were very scattered, as most bass caught came closer to docks, with one dock yielding two bass within minutes of each other. For the most part, the live bait action has remained pretty steady on Johns Lake, schooling action has seemed to slow down some but the quality bass have picked up considerably as Doug and Todd saw on day two, catching only one dink, with the rest coming in between 2 and 4 pounds and very scrappy.

Sorry for the delay in my fishing reports, things have been very crazy around here. First half of the month has seen some pretty good bass fishing. Most of my trips have been done on Johns Lake with a few stops at Butler Chain. For the most part most of my trips have been artificial baits.

Using a lot of Gitem Warlocks, spinner baits and of course the Steel Shads.
Johns Lake for the most part, the early morning schooling has slowed to a crawl, with a few bass being caught in the Deer Island cut in the morning. We have caught some good bass in wide open waters on the main lake, as well as quality bass around isolated grass patches.

This seems to be a pattern that has held up for well over a month now. Several bass in the 5 pound class had made it to the boat in this time frame on Johns Lake.

Butler Chain was a little tougher fishing. Most casts were pin point under docks, and to grass patches with submerged wood close by. Lakes that produced for us were Tibet, Chase and Blanche. Memorable trip out there was with Chris G. We had been plugging away for some quality bass and Chris had told me his life long dream was to catch a 5 pounder.

His previous big fish I believe he said was 3 pounds and it was not even a bass, so mid way thru the day, I told him lets head to what I call ” junk lake” Lake Blanche, with all the docks and submerged wood, there had to be a big bass waiting for him. We got on a good stretch of water using the Warlocks, when Chris got hit and the bass didn’t stand a chance, and yes, his dream came true with a solid bass coming in right at 5 pounds on the gripper. Great job Chris, and when your back next year, we have to catch one bigger.

The last half of April saw some good bass fishing on Johns Lake and Butler Chain. Schooling action on Johns had been very limited for us in the mornings, but always got the day off to a good start. For the most part on Johns Lake, our bass have been coming off some of our typical deeper water areas. Steel Shads and spinner baits being the best at catching the bass, a few have been caught on smaller series Ugly Duckling crank baits.

Butler Chain we had spent most of our time on Lake Chase and Tibet-Butler. Lake Chase has been good working Gitem Warlocks and heavy one ounce Sugoi spinner baits in and around thinned out grasses and lily pads. Tibet-Butler we did have some schooling action, and the heavier spinner baits tossed into the schools picked off the better quality bass. Docks have produced some good bass with the steady action coming mainly around grass beds and areas with hydrilla mixed with the grass. A few of the deeper water areas have held some good bass, working the Steel Shad like a spoon has been a very good way to pick up some from the deep drop offs.
