Take Me Fishing and Discovery Education Partner

ALEXANDRIA, VA (April 21, 2010) -The Take Me Fishing™ campaign and Discovery Education announce the launch of Explore the Blue, an online initiative encouraging youth participation in on-the-water activities and aquatic conservation efforts.

Explore the Blue is a new resource empowering teachers and parents to engage students in a dialogue about the importance of outdoor recreational activities, such as boating and fishing, and the value of clean and healthy natural resources. The rich, interactive materials help students explore the world of outdoor recreation through exciting, hands-on activities. Through this initiative, students experience the magic of being on the water with family and friends, while learning about the importance of conservation efforts at the same time.

Just in time for the spring season, the first materials from Explore the Blue includes activities educators can share with parents to continue the learning process over the summer months.

These activities include:

* Model boat building exercises that teach valuable lessons about buoyancy, water displacement, surface area, and design;
* Research projects that help students inventory plants, animals and inorganic matter they may find in and around a local body of water;
* Journal writing exercises that encourage children to record descriptions of the fish they observe, notes about the weather, and any other thoughts, ideas or observations they have about their day on the water; and
* Map reading activities that support parent-student dialogues on animal habitats.

In late summer 2010, the Take Me Fishing campaign and Discovery Education will add additional instructional materials designed specifically for classroom use by educators. These materials will include a robust collection of cross-curricular lesson plans, videos, multimedia content, activities and worksheets aligned to state education standards. In addition, Take Me Fishing and Discovery Education will launch an interactive game for students that will provide them with the tools to develop and care for their own ecosystem, as well as a digital essay contest encouraging students to document their fishing and boating experiences through video and/or digital photos.

Woods claims FLW AWF title on Sam Rayburn

FLW America Fishing SeriesJASPER, Texas (Feb. 6, 2010) – Pro Cody Woods of Jacksonville, Texas, caught three bass weighing 5 pounds, 10 ounces Saturday to win the FLW American Fishing Series Texas Division tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir with a three-day total of 13 bass weighing 32 pounds, 10 ounces. For his victory, Woods earned $24,680.

“It was slow today,” Woods said. “The sun came out and I didn’t want that to happen because it turned my bite off that I had going during the tournament. I knew where there were a few fish staging and I just happened to get lucky and catch three of them.

“I was so nervous (Friday) night just (to make the cut) that I poured a whole gallon of oil in my gas tank of my boat thinking it was my oil dispenser,” Woods added. “I’ve never won anything like this before.”

During the first two days of the tournament Woods used a floating Smithwick Rogue in three feet of water to catch his fish. On Saturday he switched to a red Rat-L-Trap with red hooks and managed to catch the winning three fish. Woods paired his Rat-L-Trap with braided line and threw it over grass in eight feet of water.

“With the braided line I can feel whether I hit grass or I have a bite,” Woods said. “I can feel it when I rip out of it.”

Rounding out the top five pros were:

2nd: Randy Cisler, Mesquite, Texas, 8 bass, 31-0, $8,391

3rd: Charles Bebber, Willis, Texas, 12 bass, 30-3, $5,923

4th: Tommy Martin, Hemphill, Texas, 15 bass, 30-1, $4,936

5th: Team Chevy pro Larry Nixon, Bee Branch, Ark., 11 bass, 29-11, $4,442

Cisler caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Pro Division Friday – a 10-pound, 8-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s Big Bass award of $294.

Keith Honeycutt of Temple, Texas, won the Co-angler Division and $9,882 cash, with a three-day total of 13 bass weighing 24 pounds, 6 ounces.

Honeycutt caught three bass weighing 4-11 Thursday while fishing with pro David Mullins of Coppell, Texas, to open the tournament in 24th place. On Friday he added five more bass weighing 10-14 to make the top-10 cut in second place while fishing with pro Timothy Griffin of Zapata, Texas. Finally, on Saturday, he sealed the win with five bass weighing 8-13 while fishing with Cisler.

Rounding out the top five co-anglers were:

2nd: Bo Standley, Silsbee, Texas, five bass, 20-0, $3,953

3rd: Sonny Kopech, Troup, Texas, 10 bass, 19-14, $1,976

4th: Kenneth Pellerin, Pasadena, Texas, 10 bass, 19-7, $1,729

5th: Danny Cherry, Kountze, Texas, 10 bass, 19-6, $1,482

Standley caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Thursday – a 10-pound, 3-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s Big Bass award of $196.

After three qualifying events are complete in each FLW American Series division – Central, Northern, Southeast, and Texas – the top 50 pros and 50 co-anglers based on the points standings from each division advance to the FLW American Fishing Series Invitational on Wheeler Lake, in Decatur Ala., Nov. 4-6. The highest-finishing pro and co-angler from each division at the American Fishing Series Championship will also qualify for the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup.

Bass Fishing Forecast for February

Trophy Bass FishingFebruary is typically a very good month for trophy bass fishing on Lake Toho and many of the Orlando lakes. Cold fronts coming thru can keep the air temperatures much cooler, so of course dressing in layers is highly recommended for this time of year. A lot of our focus is on World Famous Lake Toho, as this body of water is probably your best option at catching that trophy bass.

Your options for catching bass out here are wide depending on the weather. If we get hit by a cold front, we will consider having a dozen or two of wild shiners on the boat to slow troll behind the boat while we work spawning areas with artificial lures.
Your options for lures will range from ten inch worms to creature baits like craws.

We will target bass beds, but keep in mind that when a bass is caught from a bed we will take a picture and weight fast, and carefully release back into the water gently so we don’t harm her. Many times we have witnessed her go back to her bed, so if done properly she will not be stressed out and abort her eggs as many claim they do. We are also strictly catch and release with all bass, replicas of your catch are usually one dollar per inch more than a skin mount and will last forever.

PAA announces four dates for 2010 regular season events

 
Professional Anglers AssociationBENTON, Ky. – The Professional Anglers Association is proud to announce some of the details for their 2010 Bass Pro Shops PAA Tournament Series. On the heels of three days of meetings in Kentucky, the PAA has finalized their tournament format, entry fees, payout, field size, off limits and event dates.

The four tournament series will take place in a centralized area of the country to reduce travel expenses for the anglers as much as possible. Exact locations, registration dates and other details will be announced in the near future.

“We are ecstatic to have many of these details ready to release,” said PAA President John Crews. “The PAA wanted to announce these details so everyone can plan their 2010 calendars. We will have more details to release about the events once they are finalized. We know our events are going to create fantastic opportunities for our members to fish more televised, pro level events.”

Format:
• 30 Day off limits before first practice day (no info and not on water)
• 3 day official practice (Sunday- Tuesday)
• 1 off day (Wednesday) for registration and other activities
• 3 day tournament (Thursday- Saturday)
• Full field on first 2 days
• Top 30 fish the final day to weigh in at Bass Pro Shops store
• Pro only – must be a TOUR level member of PAA to fish any tournament in 2010

Nineteen-year old signs up as Bassmaster Elite Series pro

Bradley Roy of Lancaster , Ky. , who celebrated his 19th birthday on Nov. 2, signed up Monday for the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series, becoming the youngest angler at the sport’s highest level of pro competition.

“I know I’m young, but this has been my lifelong dream,” he said. “This is what I want to do as a career, so this is a great opportunity, a jump start on my career.”

Before Roy , the youngest Elite rookie had been Texas ‘ Corey Waldrop, who turned 20 early in the 2008 Elite season. Others included Luke Gritter of Kalamazoo , Mich. , who was 22 when he competed in the 2009 season, and Elite pro Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., who at 23 was the youngest on the 2007 Elite roster.

Roy was still 18 when he qualified Oct. 24 for the Elite Series by finishing fifth in points in the 2009 Bassmaster Southern Open trail. Only the top seven qualified.

Of the hundreds of 2009 Bassmaster Open anglers, only 21 earned invitations for the 2010 Elite season (seven from each of three Open divisions). Some anglers try for years to be among those who move up, but Roy advanced after his first Open season.

But Roy has been something of a wunderkind in BASS competitions. At age 13, he was the 2004 Bassmaster Junior World champion in the 11-14 age group. At age 17, he outperformed many other Kentuckians to earn the right to be the sole representative of his state in the 2008 BASS Federation Nation Championship.

In the Elite Series, Roy knows the game will become considerably tougher..

“Obviously, I’m going to make a lot of mistakes, but I try to learn from my mistakes,” he said “Hopefully I can learn, then adapt quickly.”

Another new challenge will be handling a grueling, eight-event regular-season schedule. The first tournament will be the March 11-14 Duel in the Delta out of Stockton, Calif.; the season closer will be the June 17-20 Sooner Run on the Arkansas River in Oklahoma. (To compete in the two-event Elite post-season for 2010 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year honors, Roy would have to be one of 12 qualifiers.)

“The travel, I’m used to,” Roy said. “The thing I worry about the most is the lakes I’ve never fished before.”

While pro fishing is his chosen career, college is still in his future. He said he plans to continue with his online course work in business and marketing.

“That’s how I fished the Opens this past year. It might take longer to get a degree, but it’s how I can continue my education while I fish the Elites,” he said.

He’s now taking fall semester exams, all while working on building a stable of sponsors. He said he has verbal commitments from several companies and is close to a boat wrap.

“This is my dream coming true, so I’m working hard, staying positive, and putting all I can into making sponsorships happen,” he said.
